Portrait of Spain: Masterpieces from the Prado

Yesterday I made my way to Brisbane Art Gallery to check out the Portrait of Spain: Masterpieces from the Prado exhibition at Queensland Art Gallery (QAG)

"This exhibition features over 100 masterpieces from one of the most revered collections of European painting in the world and tells the story of the evolution of painting in Spain over three and a half centuries. This ‘portrait of Spain’ shows the internal and external factors that contributed to the development of modern Spanish identity, through developments in painting on the Iberian Peninsula."

Características:109 x 86 cm.

This exhibition was fantastic! The workmanship of some of the works have to be seen to be believed, particularly some of the etchings on display, although many of them had themes related to sadness and death, the intricacy involved in each etching displays true talent from  the artists. Some of the paintings are heavily influenced by god and bible readings as well as obvious paintings of royals in their prime. One thing I learned throughout the exhibitions though, that surprised me particularly was that during early 1900's the Spanish artists enjoyed capturing the unfortunate, the disabled and the overweight in extravagant paintings and put them in there courts to amuse the royal, and wealthy, something today would be hugely discriminative, so some of the paintings on display might offend some. Completely opposing today's values, hairy was deemed beautiful, and  the more clothing one wore, the more attractive you were deemed. If you get the chance, it's really worth a look at before the exhibition leaves town, for both a feast for the eyes in extravagant bursts of colour and ever so intricate brush strokes and the intense history lesson one can gather from the artworks, capturing social heirachy's, laws, values and status each pieces time. I've been to most of the exhibtions at GOMA and Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) and would consider this to be one of the best so far.

* The exhibition closes on the 4th of next month so get in quick!

Hey guys, sorry I haven't posted in a while, I can feel myself getting a little slack considering there are no longer Jour1111 lectures! :( Overall though, it'd be even slacker to not acknowledge how amazing this semester has been for me, and as my very first semester at UQ draws to an end I must admit I'm a little sentimental! In such a short time, I've learned so much, particularly about journalism and achieved goals I previously deemed impossible. I've made new friends, become much more independent and I think I successfully found that balance of "work and play", something I predominately worried about coming into tertiary education.

Anyway it's a short conclusion I'm know but, I'll still be posting on here so stay tuned!

Jour1111 Assignment- Annotated Bibliography
Cosmetic Surgery- PIP Implant Disaster

Lirola, M. M. (September 2012). The Dream of a Perfect Body Come True: Multimodality in Cosmetic Surgery Advestising. Discourse & Society, 23: 487-507.
1.
This article captures the rhetorical and multimodal strategies implemented in selling cosmetic surgery. It looks at how cosmetic company’s implement a form of physical insecurity driven advertising and discourse to exploit an idealized image of the female body, one that is only achievable through cosmetic procedures. The article focuses on Western society’s increasing dependence on materialistic consumption and body altering products in order to achieve a generally male generated perception of female perfection. Physical health is taking a backseat to society’s ideal of physical beauty. This article is useful in the sense that it shines a light on the exploitation of female insecurities to sell products and identifies that developing an emotionally stimulated self-perpetuating ideology is at the forefront of the cosmetic surgery craze that’s ruling society. Limitations in this article would be that main points or article angles are based on collective opinions rather than supported findings or statistics. This credible piece of work provides the groundwork to understanding how large cosmetic surgery corporations take advantage of human emotion to generate business and aids in a better understanding towards the development of cosmetic surgery and advertising.

News Limited Network. (October 14 2012). Burst Breast Implants Have Long Term Effect. Herald Sun.

2.       The News Limited Network reviews the latest cosmetic surgery catastrophe relating to French company, Poly Implant Protégées (PIP). By applying government collected information, accompanied with personal victim accounts this article documents the rupturing of breast implants after authorities uncovered that the French implant manufacturer used industrial silicone rather than the medical-grade accepted silicone. This article aims to break down the cause and symptoms related to PIP implants as well as identify the legal rights of victims. Applying the most up-to-date, credible information, News Limited advises that even after a medically suggested removal of the implants in question, victims are still expected to encounter ongoing medical issues, many of which have not been acknowledged by the French company, or many other articles on the case. Taking a delightfully refreshing and insightful angle on the PIP implant emergency, this report mainly focuses on the aftermath and attempts to forewarn those thinking about partaking in cosmetic procedures. Limitations to this story would be that the personal victim account has only been taken by one woman, and some of the particular terminology used suggests that the symptoms this one woman encounter will occur to everyone with PIP implants, however every person reacts differently to medical procedures. This could potentially reflect lack of depth, in the interviewing process of the story.

SBS. (2012, April 5). PIP Breast Implant Ruptures Increase. Retrieved from SBS News World Australia: http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/1640265/PIP-breast-implant-ruptures-increase

3.       In this news article, SBS issue a health warning and educate readers on the sheer volume of women affected by the French company PIP and their misuse of industrial silicone in implants. Implementing internationally gathered information, this article aims to primarily warn and alert the estimated 350 000 women suspected of having PIP implants. Particularly focusing on the 6000 Australian women believed to possess the rupturing implants, this article advises victims about their rights and available help towards implant removal services, which may subsidized by Medicare. SBS offer crucial information to women affected by this cosmetic disaster, as well as provide basic information to all about the time frame, and extent of the French company’s misconduct. Limitations of this news article would be that some of the provided information throughout could be deemed contradictory, in the sense that it suggests there is no need for concern or urgency if no symptoms are occurring after urging all women in question to immediately opt for an MRI. Predominantly directed at victims, this article captures that the utmost important element of this cosmetic inquiry is to alert women about the health problems and signs associated with PIP implants. Notably acknowledging SBS as a reliable news source this piece is also a great provider of statistics and international findings on the case.

Ashleigh Fenn, A. T. (2012). Channel 7 Televison Interview- Exploding Pip Breast Implants. (R. Sadler, Interviewer)

4.       Along with three personal accounts and an implant medical officer Chris Baggoley, Channel 7 takes a personal approach to the PIP implant case and puts faces to the story.  This story primarily focuses on shaming the company and targeting women about to make the decision to opt for breast implants or any other invasive cosmetic enhancing procedure, by instilling fear into the prospective implant candidates. R. Sadler along with his interviewees, label Jean-Claude Mas, owner of the French company, as a terrorist and suggest that these implants, combined with breast feeding has caused cancer in victims children. Limitations include these extreme very one sided claims that show no attempt to hear any comment from the company in question. A strength would be that the story includes a breakdown of the cost and make of the implants as well as noting the French company PIP implants were approved on the basis of how cheap they were to make by surgeons, so that other people are accountable for this incident, something not noted by any of the above citations. Overall, although the story is highly bias, a refreshing local angle on the PIP disaster has been captured and the story is a notable source for multiple victim accounts on the case.

3 Hour No Technology Challenge Daily

Ok, so I was going to share a picture collage or some of the things I've been up to doing my strict to technology challenge at the end off this week, but since my last post I've been up to so much i figured I could share now! So here it is, enjoy!

As you can see, the exercise had been worth my while, I've been up to so much and had so much more free time, limitations to the challenge so far would be that if I'm not at home I worry about not being contactable if people need me, especially if I'm quite a distance from home e.g. the beach, so I have found on that particular day I did check my phone about an hour and a half into it! But other than that, after the first few days this exercise has become really easy and part of my normal routine, I'm finding I get a lot more out of my days and am happier knowing I'm doing things I want to do, its like clean eating for the mind. So as you can see I'm still a huge advocate for the cause and suggest if you're feeling bogged down by technology or just feeling a little over reliant on that mobile phone of yours, give it a go!
Jour1111 Lecture Reflection October 15th

Yesterdays lecture was about introducing us into Investigative Journalism, which directly coinsides with my Jour1710 Investigative Journalism course I also study at UQ.
Firstly we identify Investigative Journalism as a search to identify truths in our world. Rather than writing, the primary focus of investigative journalism is the idea, and the story. As an investigative journalist it is ones duty to use intelligence to uncover and inform. With a heightened sense of intuition a successful investigative journalist can sniff a story miles away and go digging to uncover it. In an unglamorous sense it's that desire to find out or 'be in the know' so really a natural nack for sticky beaking. Investigative journalists are insiders and base their whole career on their contact book to find out the way things work beyond a spectator and basic reporting angle. This could mean that lost of time, personal interest and even money has to be invested to come up with the goods on a particular scoop.

If we were to break up the ideaology on investigative journalism we would identify these four key points:
 1. Critical and Thorough  Journalism
2. Custodians of Conscience
3 Providing a voice to those without
4. Watchdog/ Fourth Estate

The primary focus for an investigative journalist is to uncover, expose and report stories in the public interest. Successful examples of this would be journalists involved with cases like the Watergate scandal and more locally Gold Coasts own Tesco inquiry which uncovered police and criminal corruption. This means, it is imperative to get out there and go story hunting yourself rather than re-write or report on second hand information.

Investigative journalists cut through the agenda

To sum up this lecture the three utmost basic point in investigative journalist are that you must always keep your eyes open, (observe) ask questions, (Interview) and go digging, (analysis everything).
Don't assume facts they check them out, always be prepared and start uncovering stories.
