Hey guys, as promised here's my reflection from yesterdays lecture, it might be a little bit rusty at first cause I feel like I need to get back into the swing of writing these things up, but here we go...
Yesterdays lecture was on Agenda Setting, "how media constructs reality". In relation to our previous lectures agenda setting is an extension from "News Values" which if we remember from my last lecture reflection was described as "The degree of prominence a media outlet gives to a story and the attention that is paid by an audience". Much like how we began with defining news values, yesterdays lecture began with a simple definition of Agenda Setting, which is basically, the social construction of reality, which incorporates the process of mass media presenting certain stories more frequently or predominantly, to ultimately force its viewers to perceive those particular stories as more important than others.
Extending from this we can separate agenda setting into four different groups, these are:
1.Public Agenda
2.Policy Agenda
3. Corperate Agenda
4. Media Agenda
Although these agendas can be split into four different groups it is imperative to note that all these forms work simultaneous together and are interrelated to practicing Journalists.
The media is at the forefront of what kind of news we are exposed to, like puppeteers, the media "filters and shapes" what we see on Tv (Propaganda). This can be because some stories hold more entertainment value, or bring in more viewers, but simply the media does this because they can. It becomes a reliable convenience for people in news and media to adapt and shape stories to fit into news segments and by doing this, honing in on a focus news story also becomes a much easier practice, rather then waiting day to day what "might" happen in the world.
